The letters "TCL" stand for "The Creative Life", signifying a life driven by creativity.
TCL Corporation was founded in 1981, and today is one of China¡¯s largest consumer electronics corporations operating on an international scale. Three listed companies operate under the TCL flag: TCL Corporation (S.Z000100), TCL Multimedia Technology (HK.1070) and TCL Communications Technology (HK.2618). TCL is presently composed of four main industrial groups (multimedia, communications, appliances and components), in addition to the real estate and investment business network ,and the logistics and service business network.
Over the preceding two decades, aided by the "east wind" of China¡¯s reform and open door policy, TCL¡¯s corporate culture of dedication and commitment to innovation has enabled the firm to grow rapidly from humble roots to become a giant in the Chinese electronics and information industry. In 1999, the company began to explore the possibilities of international operations, developing and promoting its independent brands in emerging markets, in addition to acquiring mature brands in the European and American markets, making the firm a pioneer in the process of the international development of Chinese business.
During its development and expansion, TCL established superior capabilities in terms of independent creativity: TCL gave birth to China¡¯s first handsfree keypad phone, its first 28 inch big screen TV, its first diamond mobile phone, its first domestically produced dual-core notebook computer, and many other epoch-making, creative products.
By 2007, TCL¡¯s global business revenue was RMB£¤39.063 billion, and the company employed more than 50,000 people across many countries and regions in Asia, America, Europe and Australasia. The company has retail organizations in around 40 countries and regions worldwide, selling TV brands under the TCL flag, including TCL, Thomson and RCA brands TV sets, as well as Alcatel branded mobile phones. TCL¡¯s total sales for all regions worldwide in 2007 exceeded 15 billion TV sets and 11.9 billion mobile phones. Overseas business revenues exceeded revenues from the Chinese domestic market, signifying that TCL had become a truly multinational company.
Key businesses under the TCL flag maintain research and development headquarters in China, the USA, France and Singapore, in addition to more than a dozen subsidiary R&D centers. The company operates approximately 20 manufacturing and processing sites in China, Poland, Mexico, Thailand and Vietnam.
The brand value of TCL reached RMB£¤40.136 billion (USD$540 million) in 2007, maintaining a steady position in the top five most valuable brands in China, and becoming the number one name in the Chinese TV mechanism manufacturing industry.
Over the next decade, TCL will continue to build on its "three strengths, one system" package, which integrates design strengths, quality strengths and marketing strengths, as well as a consumer insight system, making TCL China¡¯s most innovative brand.
Looking ahead to the future, TCL¡¯s development objective is this: to establish technical superiority with independently held intellectual property rights by continually improving the international business capabilities of the company, in order to become a respected, innovative, leading global business.
