Aircons buying guide

What AC features should I look for?

Buying an air conditioner for your home or workspace can be confusing at first. A quick search on the internet brings more questions than answers….what’s a BTU? What’s a kW? What do all these features mean? See below for all the answers.

We thought we'd explain some of these features and terms with this simple and comprehensive article. Here are some important air conditioner features you'll want to look for in order to save time and energy and improve the quality of your air.

Aircon Features

Energy Efficiency

Normally, an air conditioner's fan runs constantly, even when the compressor is turned off. But with an energy-saving switch, the fans turn off when the thermostat turns off the compressor. This maintains your ideal comfort levels with less energy usage, thereby saving on your electricity bills.

Clever Inverter

Inverter air conditioners deliver a constant airflow for improved temperature regulation and increased energy efficiency. New inverter technology ensures improved performance with energy efficiency. The TCL range of air conditioning units enjoy a split system that is faster and more proactive in helping you reach your comfort zone.

Air Purifying Filter System

An air filter system removes dust, dirt, pollen, and bacteria from the airflow. This helps you breathe easier whilst enjoying temperature control.

Smart Airflow Options

Oscillating vents with an internal motor that can sweep the unit's air flow from side to side will help cool a room more evenly. The ability to control air flow direction means that you can evenly distribute temperature control. TCL even have an option for "no breeze" so you don't get that chill when sitting directly under the unit.

Furthermore, choosing an air conditioner with variable fan speeds allows you to adjust how quickly air is circulated through the room. High fan speeds help to cool or heat a room quickly, while low speeds allow for heating or cooling without extra noise.

Remote Control/Smart Connectivity

A remote control should be a standard inclusion with most modern air conditioners. A remote with an easy-to-read screen and labels can make adjusting settings and the temperature much easier. Some units may also be controlled using a smartphone app, which is great if you’re prone to misplacing remote controls or want the freedom to switch on the unit before arriving home.

TCL offer connectivity through WiFi via smartphone app, Amazon Alexa, or Hey Google. Plus, digital connectivity through AI x IoT technology delivers improved efficiency, easy updates, and streamlined support.

Special Operational Modes

Look out for special operational modes that can offer great benefits. For examples, a Rapid Action Temperature Control mode lets his you get comfortable quickly with powerfully fast heating or cooling. This is a fantastic mode for coming home, turning on the AC, and getting the room how you want it fast. Unfortunately, it is not offered by all producers.

Another great mode is the "I Feel" Mode offered by TCL. This mode allows you to tell your air conditioner if you are too hot, too cool, or just right, and it will automatically set air delivery to match the ambient room temperature.

Noise

Although most modern air conditioners are relatively quiet, it’s important to check before you commit to purchasing a unit to avoid disruptions to your sleep and activities. You should also consider checking how loud your air conditioner’s outdoor unit, if it has one, will be. An outdoor unit that is too noisy may not only disturb you, but also your neighbours.

TCL offer a Super Quiet Operation with efficient energy usage, plus TCL split system air conditioners maintain a low noise profile across the whole range.

Ease of Cleaning

Aircon units need reasonably regular cleaning. Look for features that make this process easier.

Key components should be simple to take apart, wash, and then reassemble. Some units also have a Filter Cleaning Reminder, like the range of TCL air conditioners. This handy feature reminds you when it is time to clean the filter, ensuring the air in your room is always as fresh as can be.

Manufacturer's warranty

Look out for good warranty periods. Generally warranties range from one or two years for parts and labor. The exceptional quality of a TCL air conditioning system is backed up by a formidable 5 year warranty.

What size AC is right for me?

When it comes to size, we need to look at Capacity & Efficiency.

Air conditioning capacity is usually measured in British Thermal Units (BTUs) and output power is measured in Kilowatts (kW). Efficiency is classified using a star system where the more stars a unit has, the more efficient it is. Some suggestions below;

  • Reverse cycle air conditioners will use two kW values: the first for cooling capacity and the second for heating.
  • A unit’s efficiency is given as a star-rating and established by determining the ratio of power input to cooling and heating capacity.
  • In general, most models list their cooling capacity to help you gauge the right unit for the size room you have, this was indicated with a measurement in British Thermal Units (BTUs).
  • So to simplify, the larger the room, the more BTUs you need. A good guide would be 1 BTU is suitable for temperature control of 1㎡.

Hopefully this guide has given you some helpful tips for purchasing your next air conditioner. To explore the TCL range of air conditioners, visit out one of our in-store or online retailers.
