What are the Black Friday Sales?

Over the last few years, a new phenomenon has been occurring in Australia. With the combination of the internet and e-commerce in Australia, new practices have been slowly creeping into the national psyche. Even before people got to understand what is going on, these new practices have already caught on with a good number of Aussies.

Perhaps with this one, it can be attributed to the decades of media that Australia has been consuming from all over the world. With them, they introduced a new phenomenon:

Black Friday Shopping!

Here is a term that many Australians have come to recognise and participated in droves. Traditionally, Black Friday and the associated holiday of Thanksgiving are an American thing but Australians are slowly adopting it as their own.

Black Friday

Where did Black Friday originate?

The term descended from a myriad of sources, a good number of them having nothing to do with the occurrences of today.

Thanksgiving is a holiday that is celebrated in the United States. Although it has been a tradition of the nation since before its founding, the day only became a national holiday during the most heated parts of the Second World War. Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November every year.

Thanksgiving signals the beginning of the Christmas season. This is when families will now start going out to do their Christmas shopping and prepare for the new year. The biggest shopping begins the day after Thanksgiving, which is a Friday.

But the name Black Friday had not come in yet.

Back in the '50s, suburban Americans and other tourists would flock into the city of Philadelphia after Thanksgiving, in anticipation of the army-navy American football game which was held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. As they descended on the city, they would also rush to department stores to begin their Christmas shopping.

As you can already tell, this was a recipe for bedlam. The increase in people and traffic would mean that chaos would engulf the city with shoppers arguing with store owners on the prices of items among other things. That is how the name Black Friday came to be, in the context of shopping.

However, by the '80s, store owners had recognised that the Friday after Thanksgiving was a good day to do the shopping. On this day, a lot of the shops that were in the red would certainly get into the black with the finances. By the '90s, Black Friday sales had grown into a custom that retail stores all over the US would take part in.

What Does Australia have to do with Black Friday?

The Thanksgiving holiday and associated events surrounding it have never been in the Australian lexicon. If anything, Thanksgiving and Black Friday were introduced to Australia via American media.

The traditional day for bricks and mortar shopping has always been Boxing Day. However, that tradition has slowly been eroding over the years. In 2018, Black Friday sales had surpassed traditional December sales in Australia. This is a testament to the growing popularity of this day.

In February 2018, it's estimated that 73% of Australians have been doing their online shopping and that number is expected to grow to 85% by 2021. This is mostly because of the convenience that shopping online offers, with Australia Post offering great insights on the growth and impact of e-commerce in Australia.

While Black Friday has seen a shift in the shopping habits of many Australians, it would be hard to discount the many benefits of the event. A great number of discounts on various items means that a lot of items do become available to many people at affordable rates.

The popularity of Black Friday deals has grown so much that most businesses tend to extend the trading around it. This has resulted in days such as Small Business Saturday and/or Sunday. But perhaps the best of all of these for gadget freaks is Cyber Monday.

With Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales on offer, a lot of outlets that sell electronic appliances offer up massive discounts across their range. If you have been planning on getting yourself an upgrade on your entertainment centre, this is the day you should be aiming at.
