Easy Guide on How to Wash Pillows In A Washing Machine
Pillows are prone to accumulating dust and dirt, which can affect their freshness and comfort. Regularly washing your pillows is an easy and effective way to maintain their cleanliness. Washing pillows in a washing machine is a simple process. Here are some tips on how to wash pillows in a washing machine:
Before washing your pillow, check the label to determine if it is machine washable.
If it says "Dry Clean Only" or "Hand Wash Only", then don't wash it in a washing machine!
If the label says "Machine Washable", proceed to step 2:
Before that, look for any obvious stains on the pillow cover and apply a laundry pre-treatment to them. Give it 15 minutes to sit.
Place the pillows in the washing machine. If you have a large load of laundry and want to wash your pillows separately, do so now. Otherwise, toss them into the mix with everything else.
Distribute all of your clothing evenly throughout the drum so that it will agitate properly during each cycle (this will help prevent wear on certain items).
Once you've added your pillows to the drum, it's time to add detergent and softener.
Use a mild laundry detergent that is free of dyes or perfumes; these can stain your pillowcases.
If desired, add a liquid fabric softener during this step in order to reduce static cling when drying the pillows.
Do not use bleach on your pillows--it will cause them to discolor over time and may even lead to premature wear and tear on the fabric or filling materials.
You should also consider the mode you're using. If it has a gentle cycle, use that; otherwise, opt for the normal cycle with warm water.
If your washing machine has a "delicate" option, select this as well. This setting is particularly useful if you're worried about shrinkage or color bleeding on your pillowcase or duvet cover.
Finally, you can add an extra rinse cycle to ensure that any excess detergent is cleared.
Remove your pillows from the washing machine and place them in the dryer (or if you are using a Washer & Dryer combo, you don’t need to take them out) with a couple of dryer balls when the cycle is finished (or tennis balls). So that your pillows are extra-fluffy, this prevents the fill from clumping.
Set it to low-to-medium heat and let them dry completely, for about an hour (or more). Remove them from the dryer and let them air-dry for a few hours just to make sure no moisture is remaining before using them again because even a little bit of moisture might cause mildew.
Washing your pillows every six months or so is a good idea. If you can't wash your pillows, vacuum them and wipe them down with a damp cloth. If possible, air pillows out to remove dust and other particles that might accumulate over time.
Daily fluffing will help your pillows regain their shape and get rid of dust. Then, for a few hours every month or so, hang them outside. Ideally, do this on a sunny, windy day.
For cleaning pillows, it is best to use a front-loader or top-loading washer without an agitator, which is the spinning spindle in the middle of the washer. That doesn't mean you can't clean pillows in a top-loading machine with an agitator; simply insert the pillows in vertically so they don't get damaged and agitate for only one or two minutes on the gentle cycle.
