Black Friday Sales have become one of the most important events on the retail calendar, both for customers and sellers. For a number of years now, they have competed in popularity with the traditional Boxing Day Sales. When comparing the difference to Boxing Day Sales, however, the Black Friday Sales have one major benefit;

They happen before Christmas!

In the leadup to Christmas, Black Friday Sales present the ideal opportunity for buyers to pick up some great deals on gifts.

But it’s not all about Christmas either. If you’ve worked hard this year, perhaps you deserve to treat yourself. Buy that special something you’ve had your eye on, but is normally just outside your price range.

Alternatively, if it is about the holiday season, use the opportunity to stretch your Christmas budget just a little further. By saving with the sales, you can give gifts to more people, or better gifts to the special people you love most.

What is Cyber Monday?

The Cyber Monday sales typically happen on the Monday immediately following Black Friday. First appearing in 2005 in the USA, they were created in order to encourage online sales and purchases.

In Australia, Cyber Monday was first trialled in 2012 under the name “Click Frenzy”. Since then, its popularity has grown too. Whilst originally aimed at ecommerce, in reality, many combination Black Friday Cyber Monday sales happen across the entire long weekend, both online and instore. Having said this, keep an eye out for special online-only Cyber Monday deals. These are what help give Cyber Monday the “Click Frenzy” name in Australia.

When are the Black Friday Sales in 2023?

The sales are an American shopping date that have grown in popularity in Australia and around the world in recent years. Black Friday is always on the 4th Friday in November, the day immediately after Thanksgiving. And whilst not many people celebrate Thanksgiving in Australia, the Friday itself is still recognised as the primary sale date.

This year, the important dates are;

  • Black Friday - Friday, 24th November.
  • Cyber Monday - Monday, 27th November.

With regard to the sales themselves, some businesses start discounting as early as the end of October. Often specials and discounts are delivered in waves, all culminating at the penultimate sales across the Black Friday weekend. Retailers will also often release special extra discounts, so be on the lookout.

Set the dates in your calendar and get prepared.

How to get the best Black Friday Deals

The Black Friday Cyber Monday sales are one of the best times to get great deals on technology items. Pick up products such as new TVs and soundbars, or white goods appliances such as washing machines, clothes dryers, fridges and other kitchen appliances.

If you want to get the most out of your Black Friday shopping deals, here is our list of suggestions.

Plan ahead

Have your shopping list ready. Know what you want and the best places to look for deals. You won’t waste any time on the sales days, and you’ll reduce the risk of going over budget with impulse buys.

Do your research

Check out the buying guides, especially if you’re buying a tech item. You won’t waste valuable time in-store trying to figure out if the features you’re after are included in the sales item.

Be on the lookout

Know the standard RRP price of the items that you want to buy in advance. This way you’ll know the real discount you’re receiving and whether a retail price has been artificially inflated ahead of the sale. Whilst there are some unscrupulous stores out there, this shouldn’t happen with the major retailers and reputable sellers.

Know your budget

Know what your spending limits are and how much you may be able to stretch them. This way you won’t end up with buyer’s remorse further down the track after reviewing your accounts. Also, prioritise. Know which items are the most important for you, and go for those first.

Get in early

The best deals are the ones likely to be snapped up quickly. Get in early and be that person that snaps them up.

Enjoy the Sales

Importantly, enjoy the opportunity to get some great deals, but don’t be too upset if you can’t manage every item on your list. After all, Boxing Day is just around the corner.
