In recent years, Black Friday sales have become an important date in the retail calendar. For retailers, they're a chance to promote both new and existing products in the lead up to the holiday season. For consumers, the sales are a great opportunity to score some fantastic discounts and bargains before Christmas. It's the perfect win/win situation.
The idea of the Black Friday sales originated in the USA. The sales traditionally take place on the first Friday following Thanksgiving, that being the 4th Thursday in November. Despite its American origin and link to Thanksgiving, the sales have been wholeheartedly taken up in many countries around the world, including Australia.
Whilst the Black Friday Sales have been popular since the 1980s and around for longer than that, in 2005 the Cyber Monday sales were created as well.
Originally, Cyber Monday was meant to prompt ecommerce and online sales. Nowadays, both sales typically run in tandem, including the weekend between and often with extra days either end. As the time approaches, be on the lookout for all sorts of specials.
In Australia, the Black Friday/Cyber Monday combination is second only to the Boxing Day sales, and by an every-narrowing margin. This year, Black Friday falls on the 25th November and Cyber Monday on the 28th November.
