How To Prepare Your Air Conditioner For Summer

As the summer comes in and temperatures rise, finding a way to manage the heat is a primary concern. As more and more people continue to work from home, air conditioners have a key role to play.
Usually the air conditioner is idle during winter months, collecting a fine layer or two of dust. While clearing dust from the outside is more of fixing the appearance, it is useful to look at service and maintenance of the air conditioner while ensuring the inner workings are in order. This ensures your summer is not spent in a pool of sweat due to a malfunction in the AC or due to delays in getting someone to fix the Air Conditioner.
Split air conditioners come with indoor and outdoor units. Split AC consists of the compressor, condenser coils and fan motor in outdoor unit. The indoor unit has the evaporator coils and the fan motor and the outdoor unit are connected through copper pipes. In a split AC the outdoor units are cleaned separately.
So, when an AC unit is not used for months during winter, what should you do to prepare your AC for summer?
SCHEDULE AN INSPECTION
Typically, during the maintenance and service the specialist performs an inspection on your air conditioner. This involves looking closely at all the key components of the AC system like compressor, evaporator, condenser unit, drainage, coils, coolant level, filters etc. that comprise your system and allow it to function properly. If any fault is found then the specialist suggests a repair or clean up replacement of certain parts, as the need may be.
REMOVE DUST
One key area that impacts AC performance and can lead to rapid deterioration is the accumulation of dust in the cooling unit as well as on the coils. These can cause overheating of the system as it is unable to cool the airflow effectively. Further, the presence of dust can deteriorate the material itself over a period of time and reduce overall life of the air conditioner. It’s best to get a trained service engineer to remove dust from the condenser or evaporator and other key components of the system. This prevents overheating that is caused by a build-up of dust.
CLEAN AIR FILTER
AC filters are crucial to ensure you breathe clean air free of bacteria, fungi, virus or dust. Year 2020 has shown us how important it is to build immunity.
