Summers are dreadful.

Intense heat, continuous sweating and feeling drained from both are not uncommon. We cannot imagine summers without an air conditioner

Some of us might be considering buying a new one. Others might be wondering how much an air conditioner should be used during the day. Many might be worried about the increased energy bills.

Unfortunately, there are many common myths surrounding usage of air conditioners.

Fortunately, we bust them all below for you.

1.    BIGGER THE BETTER

Size of an air conditioner is crucial in ensuring the room cools optimally. Too big an air conditioner for a small room will make the room feel frigid and uncomfortable. Too small an air conditioner and it may struggle to heat the area, thereby drawing more electricity.

Air conditioners come in different sizes for a reason. When you install an AC that's appropriate for the room size, you also ensure they run efficiently without drawing too much electricity.

Take a look at the table below to help you understand different TCL air conditioners for different room sizes.

2.    LOWER THE TEMPERATURE SET, FASTER  THE ROOM COOLS

It is normally suggested that 18-25 degrees is a good setting for temperature on the AC. AC’s do not run faster or slower depending on temperature set. How much time they take to cool the room depends on a number of factors such as type of AC, size of room, outside temperature etc.

If you set a temperature too low, you are burdening your AC to work harder than required. This additional burden may cause it to wear and tear sooner. Additional disadvantages include high electricity bills, more frequent maintenance and service schedules and reduced durability of your air conditioner.

3.    IF MY AC IS WORKING, THERE IS NO NEED OF MAINTENANCE

Air Conditioners have many components- Compressors, condensers, fans, evaporators, filters etc. They all perform a certain function. But with regular usage, they also experience wear and tear, just like any other device.

Example: A filter's job is to ensure that the air that you breathe is free of bacteria, fungi, virus , spores and dust. But over time, they also gather dust and need cleaning.

Similarly, a compressor is the heart of an air conditioner and needs to be well lubricated to run efficiently.

While you can ensure a clean up from outside , it's always best to let a professional run the maintenance of your air conditioner. Don’t wait for the AC to stop working before you call for service. TCL experts suggest scheduling at least 2 maintenance schedules every year.

4.    ITS BEST TO LEAVE AN AC ON ALL THE TIME

Regular ON and OFF on any device uses up more electricity. While this is true, leaving an air conditioner on all the time is an inefficient way of using it. Whether a light bulb or fan or air conditioner, why leave a device on when you are not in the room to enjoy its benefits? More usage means:

-       More maintenance costs
-       More carbon footprint
-       High electricity bills
-       Less Durability of the cooling unit

You can manage cooling by buying a smart AC or an Inverter AC. Smart ACs are connected to your phone and you can manage the setting from the palm of your hand. Inverter ACs are designed to optimize energy usage over time and reduce your electricity bill by upto 50%.

5.    I DO NOT NEED AN AC IF I HAVE A FAN

Effectively, a fan and an air conditioner perform a cooling function. But they are not interchangeable. Just like a feature phone and smartphone perform the basic function of calling and texting , but cannot be used interchangeably, similarly, an AC cannot be replaced by a fan or cooler. Fans provide light to moderate cooling, perhaps a good option when temperatures are in late 20s or early 30s.

Air Conditioners provide better cooling that lasts longer. It is true that the operational costs of using a fan are lower than that of an AC. But a fan cannot provide the desired cooling when temperatures are close to or more than 40 degree celsius.

When buying an air conditioner or wondering how to use them, don’t go by what you hear. Always speak to an expert.
